The Michigan Colocation company, Online Tech, is hosting an educational webinar on the transition from IPv4 to IPv6.
Internet protocol addresses are numerical labels that direct internet traffic to the appropriate location. These labels are currently widely used in version 4 format which is now presenting a problem for the growth of the internet and its devices as the supply of this finite number of addresses continues to dwindle.
IPv6 is set to solve this problem by drastically increasing the number of possible addresses from around 4.3 billion to over 340 trillion, trillion, trillion addresses by changing the format. An example of a IPv4 to IPv6 format change would be moving from 66.220.149.32 to 2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c:0:0:3.
The transition from IPv4 to IPv6, set to gradually take place over the next few years, has been highlighted this week by the announcement that the internet will run out of IPv4 addresses by the end of the week. This means that the demand for new IPv6 addresses will soon increase, forcing companies to upgrade their devices and services to the new protocol.
To help Michigan businesses prepare for the IPv4 to IPv6 transition, Online Tech is hosting a webinar on 04.06.11 at 4pm EDT. The webinar will provide an overview of the transition and give businesses a step by step guide for preparation.
